Can Elton John become a grand-slam awards champ?
Monday, May 25 2009

So far only ten people have won the grand slam of showbiz peer-group prizes — the Oscar, Emmy, Grammy and Tony: Mel Brooks, John Gielgud, Whoopi Goldberg, Helen Hayes, Audrey Hepburn, Marvin Hamlisch, Mike Nichols, Rita Moreno, Richard Rodgers and Jonathan Tunick.

All of Gold Derby's award seers predict that Elton John will win the Tony Award on June 7, 2009 for his music score for inevitable best-musical champ "Billy Elliott." Having already won an Oscar for best song of 1994 ("Can You Feel the Love Tonight?" from "The Lion King") and five Grammys, all he'll need soon to join the grand-slam pantheon is an Emmy. He's not only eligible this year, but he's also campaigning aggressively to nab it.

Elton and his partner David Furnish could win Emmys as co-producers of "Spectacle With Elvis Costello" on the Sundance Channel, which competes for best variety series. The show features Costello hosting interviews with, and performances by, music icons such as Smokey Robinson, Herbie Hancock and Diana Krall.
